About kava and kavalactones

Piper methysticum, known as kava, is a shrub in the pepper family (Piperaceae) that people in the Pacific have cultivated for centuries. It is called 'awa in Hawai'i, yaqona in Fiji, 'ava in Samoa and sakau on Pohnpei. Botanists note that its native range is uncertain, with Melanesia, including Vanuatu, the most likely origin, and that it spread across the islands through human voyaging.

Its root and rhizome are the parts used. Pacific tradition prepares them as a drink, with the ground or pounded root mixed into water and strained. Capsules are a modern format for a root-derived ingredient and are not a traditional preparation.

Kavalactones are lipid-soluble compounds concentrated in kava root. Six major ones are commonly named: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin. Their levels change with cultivar, plant part and plant age, so two kava products can differ in composition.

Label-reading note: this page lists a 30% kava extract, with Piper methysticum extract root powder, hemp protein powder and vegetable cellulose in the ingredients. When comparing kava products, check how the percentage is defined and whether a kavalactone percent is stated, then read the ingredients list on the pouch label.
