About kava and kavalactones

Kava (Piper methysticum) is a shrub in the pepper family, Piperaceae. It is a long-cultivated Pacific crop that is grown from stem cuttings, and different island communities know it by different names, including 'awa in Hawai'i, yaqona in Fiji, 'ava in Samoa and sakau on Pohnpei. The parts used are the root and the rhizome (the underground stem base).

In Pacific cultures, kava has long been prepared as a drink: root material is ground, pounded or chewed, mixed with water, strained and shared from a communal bowl, often in ceremonies and community gatherings.

Kavalactones are a class of lipid-soluble (fat-soluble) compounds found in the root. Six are commonly called the major kavalactones: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin. How much of each is present differs between cultivars, plant parts and plant ages.

What "standardized 70% kavalactone" means: a standardized extract is adjusted so that a chosen group of compounds makes up a stated share of the extract.
