What to look for on an Amanita muscaria label

Before you add anything to your cart, check that the listing and the package answer these basic questions:

• Is the species named? Look for the scientific name Amanita muscaria, not just "mushroom" or "fly agaric." Our primer What Is Amanita Muscaria? explains why the name matters.
• What form is it? Extract (as in the gummies), powdered mushroom pressed into tablets, or whole dried caps. These aren't interchangeable, and a good label says which one you're buying.
• What does the milligram number measure? A number like "350 mg per tablet" should say what it counts. On our tablets, it's milligrams of Amanita muscaria per tablet. If a listing gives a milligram figure without saying per what (per piece, per pack, per container), treat it as unclear.
• Full ingredient list and allergens. Gummies usually contain sweeteners, gelling agents, and flavors. Our Amanita gummies list wheat, for example.
• Count or weight. Tablet count, gummy count, or net weight for dried caps.
• Age and shipping limits. A responsible seller states an age requirement and any states it won't ship to.

Be wary of labels that lean on hype instead of facts. Words like "amplified," superlatives, or an exact "0%" for a compound need a lab report behind them.

How to read an Amanita muscaria lab report

An Amanita lab report (often called a COA, or certificate of analysis) is a record of what a lab measured in one sample. It isn't a marketing claim. Here's how to read one, section by section.

1. The header: who tested what, and when

• Lab name and license or accreditation number. This tells you who ran the test.
• Sample ID and lot or batch number. Compare the lot to the one on your package. A report only describes the sample that was tested.
• Matrix or type. For example "Ingestible / Soft Chew" for a gummy, or "dried mushrooms" for raw material. This tells you whether the finished product or an ingredient was tested.
• Dates. Received and completed dates show how recent the test is.

2. The results table: muscimol and ibotenic acid lines

Potency panels for Amanita products usually list muscimol and ibotenic acid, the two compounds most associated with Amanita muscaria, and sometimes other analytes too. Each row typically has these columns:

• LOD (limit of detection): the lowest amount the method can reliably detect.
• LOQ (limit of quantitation): the lowest amount the method can reliably put a number on.
• Result columns: the same measurement in different units, such as percent by weight (%), milligrams per gram (mg/g), milligrams per unit (mg/unit), or milligrams per serving or container. Look for a note like "1 unit = gummy, 4.82 g" to see what "unit" means on that report.

3. What "ND," "<LOQ," and "detected" mean

• ND (not detected): the lab didn't find the compound above its limit of detection. That isn't the same as a guaranteed zero. It means the amount, if any, was below what the method can detect.
• <LOQ: the compound was detected, but below the level the method can quantify.
• A number: the compound was detected and measured at that level in the tested sample.

So if a label says "0% ibotenic acid" but the lab report shows a number on the ibotenic acid line, the label and the lab data don't match, and the lab report is the better record. "Detected" is a measurement, not a verdict: it tells you something was present, not whether that's good or bad. The lab behind our gummy report says so plainly on its report: it "makes no claims as to the efficacy, safety or other risks associated with any detected or non-detected levels of any compounds reported herein."

4. Potency panels vs. contaminant panels

Not every report measures the same things. A potency panel reports compounds like muscimol and ibotenic acid. A contaminant panel looks for things like toxic elements (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic), pesticides, radionuclides, or nitrates. It often has a "compliance" column showing whether each result is within the limit named in the lab's reference method. A contaminant panel won't tell you anything about muscimol or ibotenic acid, and a potency panel won't tell you about heavy metals. Check which kind you're looking at.
