About curcumin and turmeric
Curcumin is the bright yellow-orange pigment in turmeric, the root (rhizome) of the plant Curcuma longa, a relative of ginger. Turmeric has been grown in South Asia, mainly India, for thousands of years as a spice and a dye. Curcumin is the main member of a group of related compounds called curcuminoids, which make up only a small share of raw turmeric root. An extract concentrates them.
Piperine is the pungent compound in black pepper (Piper nigrum).
