About kava and kavalactones
The kava plant, Piper methysticum, is a Pacific shrub belonging to the pepper family (Piperaceae). Its root and rhizome are the parts used. Names for it vary by place: 'awa in Hawai'i, yaqona in Fiji, 'ava in Samoa and sakau on Pohnpei.
Traditionally, Pacific communities make a drink by combining ground or pounded kava root with water and straining it. It is typically shared from a communal bowl in ceremonial and social settings. This shot is a different format: a flavored liquid containing kava root extract, as described above.
An extract is made by drawing compounds out of plant material. Kava root contains kavalactones, a class of lipid-soluble compounds. Six are widely named as the major ones: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin. The amounts and proportions depend on the cultivar, the plant part and the age of the plant.
Label-reading note: this page lists 150 mg of kava extract per 60 ml bottle but does not list a kavalactone percentage. If you want to compare kava products, check whether the label states a kavalactone percent, and read the full ingredients list on the back label.
