About kava and kavalactones
Kava (Piper methysticum) is a shrub in the pepper family, Piperaceae, grown across Pacific islands such as Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Hawai'i and Pohnpei. You may see it called 'awa, yaqona, 'ava or sakau depending on the island. The plant is cloned from cuttings rather than grown from seed.
The root and rhizome are the parts used. Powdered root is close to how the drink has traditionally been made in places such as Fiji and Tonga, where dried root is ground, mixed with water and strained before being shared from a communal bowl. In Vanuatu, fresh root is more common.
Kavalactones are a class of lipid-soluble compounds found in the root. Six are widely named as major: kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxyyangonin. Levels depend on the cultivar, the plant part and the plant's age.
Noble and tudei: "noble" kava refers to cultivars traditionally preferred for drinking, and "tudei" (two-day) refers to a different group of cultivars. The Codex regional standard for kava beverage products specifies noble cultivars. This page lists the powder as 100% Noble Kava, Pouni Ono, with a lab report linked above.
Label-reading note: check the type and ingredients stated on the label and look for a stated kavalactone percent.
