How green Maeng Da is made

Green powder generally comes from leaves picked at middle age, after the pale veins of a young leaf have darkened to green but before they turn red. Producers tend to dry this leaf fairly fast at gentle temperatures, often on racks indoors or in shade with fans moving air, and some finish it outdoors for a short time. Keeping the heat low is what holds the color: University of Florida researchers found that leaf dried at about 25 °C (77 °F) stayed green, while portions of the same harvest dried much hotter browned. Practices differ by farm, which is one reason we post a lab report for the color.

About the Maeng Da name

The words are Thai. Traders use Maeng Da, roughly "pimp grade," for a top-of-the-harvest lot, and different farms apply it to leaf they have picked out themselves, so no single Maeng Da tree exists. Kratom growing in Thailand was restricted for many years, and the name followed the trade south. Most Maeng Da on the U.S. market today is grown in Indonesia, commonly on Sumatra or in Kalimantan on Borneo. The name tells you how the leaf is sold, not which farm grew it.
